Why should you work with a special education advocate?

  1. An advocate can help you navigate the IEP process and make sure your child gets the educational services and supports he or she requires. An advocate will ensure that the IEP document protects your child's right to a Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE).
  2. Special education advocates have experience with school systems and can work with you to ensure that school personnel provide appropriate, individualized services for your child. An effective advocate should work collaboratively with your school district, but will also work aggressively to achieve your goal when necessary.
  3. A well-trained advocate knows the law and can help you determine when you should seek legal advice. In addition, advocates can often provide services that would be more costly with an attorney.
  4. An advocate should take the time to get to know your child's unique needs. An advocate with extensive clinical experience will understand the complexities of your child's disability and how it impacts on their learning.
  5. Most importantly, an advocate can empower you to advocate for your child. Armed with information and support, parents are the best advocates for their children.
